My biggest issue with this book is that it talks too much about social marketing Gary built a huge business using social tools and so thats what he talks about (I think he talks about it too much in this book).  When I think about what type of book this is, I think its a social marketing book.  I expected some other stuff Having said that, I see people talking about it all the time, and many people are saying Im reading it again.  Gary knows how to touch people.  Stripping out all of the social marketing stuff, the thing I get the most from this book is the excitement and permission to achieve a ton of stuff to be successful to conquer to CRUSH IT! Heres the question: WHY dont you Crush It?  Are you afraid of failure, or afraid of success?  Do you not have enough smarts, looks or money?  Is the economy not good enough? Paul Singhs story Having bootstrapped my own ventures from the ground up, I managed to convince my younger self that networking was a waste of time. I routinely toiled away for hours on end, hiding behind my laptop deep within datacenters and coffee shops in the DC Metro area and actively avoided nearly every opportunity to meet other entrepreneurs. Fast forward nearly 10 years when I joined PBwiki as the Director of Support and was immediately challenged to build my own personal brand. I wasnt exactly sure where to start but I began blogging twice a week and stumbled across Dans personal branding blog. I spent a weekend reading through nearly every post but, being a process guy, needed to systematize the way I would tackle my own rebranding efforts. I ended up creating a simple, five-step plan to rebranding yourself and found it to be more useful than I ever imagined. My advice to others would be to simply get started, today as with most things in life, you are your own worst enemy. You can choose to continue reading about personal branding to no end and dreaming about your ideal job or you can force yourself to spend at least 10 minutes to get started right now. Today, I am PBwikis Director of Information Systems and routinely attend networking events in the San Francisco Bay Area and the DC Metro area. In fact, I specifically set aside a $3000 budget per year to travel between the coasts to keep in touch with entrepreneurs that Ive met at these same events. Having a strong, consistent personal brand has led to a number of unexpected opportunities, new friends and a decent amount of side income as well. The point is that you need to own your personal brand and you have to get started today. Youre unique, just like everyone else start capitalizing on that uniqueness today and watch yourself get ahead in life faster than you ever imagined!

An Important Message Disabilities Neednt Be Disabling We often think that in order to be happy, we have to have to acquire something. Perhaps that something is fame, money, power, health, even sex. But when you take a look at the people who have those things, they’re often not happy. Just look at what happened to Robin Williams. Being happy is something that comes from within. It’s about the process, not the end result. Happy people are happy whether they draw the short straw in life or not. If you’ve got a disability, happiness can often feel out of reach. How are you supposed to find a partner or get a job when you’re stuck in a transport chair? Here we’re going to take a look at why disabilities needn’t be disabling. We’re going to investigate some of the ways that people with disabilities can have a productive, fulfilling and happy lives. Remember, it’s about living in the moment. Be As Independent As You Can Be In the past, having a severe disability meant that you were reliant on other people to help you 24/7. But today, there are far more tools and gadgets that can help disabled people keep their independence. This is important for two reasons. The first is that people who are disabled can often end up feeling guilty about always needing somebody to care for them. We all know that looking after someone full time is tough. And often the person being cared for can feel bad as a result. The second is that independence gives you a sense freedom in the world. It’s hard to live day to day and not be in control of important parts of your life. Try doing things like cooking a recipe from scratch without help or getting your driver’s license. Accept Your Individuality There’s a certain human need to want to “fit in” with the rest of the crowd. But when you’re disabled, this can be difficult. The people who make their disabilities work are those who accept that they are different. In fact, they wind up falling in love with the things that make them unique. It’s what makes the world interesting and varied and a worthwhile place to live. Being different identifies you as an outsider, and somebody other people can look up to as an example. Remember Your Sexuality Human sexuality is almost universal, and an important part of our identity. It’s central to making sure that we’re happy and connected to the world in which we live. You might think that being disabled and finding a partner is tough and it is. But advertising yourself has never been easier, thanks to the internet and other social platforms. As somebody with a disability, you might want to try more indirect methods of meeting people and getting to know them better than dating sites. Look for events on sites like Meetup and see what is happening in your local area. Remember to dress up, powder, shave, and so whatever you can to make yourself feel sexy in your body. In this interview, Jay talks about why and how businesses should be and shouldnt be engaging with customers, and more. What is the NOW revolution and why did you write this book NOW? The NOW Revolution occurs when customers demands to engage with businesses immediately and authentically force major shifts in company structure and behavior. We wrote the book because that tipping point has just been reached. But yet, most companies are trying to succeed in real-time and on the social Web with yesterdays playbook. Many Facebook pages are nothing but Yellow Pages ads 2.0, for example. Can you talk about the notion of winning and losing customers in real-time? In this new era, every customer is a potential reporter. We routinely praise and punish brands in a matter of seconds. Companies can amplify the positive and mitigate the negative by participating in these interactions with speed, humility, and sociability. Danny Sullivan of SEO fame talks about the anyone know phenomenon in this regard. Search Twitter for anyone know + a term that relates to your industry. Youll likely find tons of opportunities to interact in a useful, appropriate way that can create new customers or build loyalty among existing ones. In the book, we call this potential to win business by having your antenna up The Opportunity Economy. What should be the selection criteria for selecting the right talent to evangelize your brand? Its much more about passion than experience. The reality is that if you dont love the brand and what it stands for, you wont be a particularly good advocate and steward of that brand. As Jamie Grove, the VP of Marketing at ThinkGeek pondered when we interviewed him for the book, Why dont car companies only hire people that love cars? Further, we see social becoming a skill, rather than a job. Most companies have dedicated, siloed social media persons today. Eventually, when the flood of customer contacts and inquiries via the social Web really soars, that centralization will become an impediment to speed. Social needs to be a part of many peoples jobs. How do you get your brand to move along the Humanization Highway as you call it? You cant do it at bayonet point. Humanization isnt forceable in any meaningful way. So much of social media success, at both the individual and corporate level, is cultural. If you believe in sociability, and if you believe that having conversations with customers that may not always revolve around your company is important, youll succeed. So much of what you talk about on this site is in alignment with that principle. That said, the 5 steps on the Humanization Highway are ignoring, listening, responding, participating, and storytelling. Each move forward requires companies to broaden their social participation, both topically and from a personnel perspective. What are some common mistakes brands make when it comes to interacting with customers in real-time? Most companies dont interact in real-time. The perceived difference between a tweet answered in 2 minutes and a tweet answered in 15 minutes is tremendous. To be in the 2-minute business, you have to have constant listening and people empowered to respond fast. Expectation management. Some companies interact in real-time, but only some of the time. We put hours of operation on our front doors, and mention them on our voice mail messages, but we dont acknowledge them in our social outposts. If you dont monitor your Facebook page at night, say so. Let customers know what to expect. @xboxsupport does this well on Twitter. Businesses are trying to close the sale in a single contact. How about dinner and a movie first? The difference between helping and selling is just two letters, but that difference is enormous. You earn the right to promote and sell in social media as a person or as a company by your demonstrated willingness to help others without immediate reward for yourself. The great irony is that success in The NOW Revolution is often actually derived over the long term, not real-time.
